We see or apprehend, inscribe or record, select and publish.
Public Films consists of Writer/Director/Cameraman/Editor Paul Janman and Producer Echo Zeanah Janman. In short, we are committed to using media technologies both old and new, to document the world in aesthetic forms.
We both started out as students of social anthropology with background experience in fine arts and theatre and we are constantly making films. We love the virtues of both HD and lo-fi digital as well as analogue film technologies and have done hard yards towards technical agility and creative empowerment.
We have a special interest in ethnographic and cultural/art film projects but we can handle a whole range of creative commissions for personal or community records and archives as well as for public information, promotional and educational purposes. We can write, produce, shoot and edit for streaming on the net or distribution by just about any media format you can think of.
For ‘Atenisi University in tropical Tonga, for example, we salvaged years of old VHS recordings and disintegrating papers for digitisation and compiling. Alongside our new footage, this important community project then became the feature documentary Tongan Ark, which has both supported the school and toured the world.
